Spot Repair

Local repair. Invisible result.

Spot repair, also known as SMART repair, repairs paint damage locally: only the damaged part of the panel is prepared and sprayed. From € 299 incl. VAT, scratches, stone chips and parking damage disappear without a full respray. The colour is measured on the car and blended into the existing paintwork, with a 2-year GT repair warranty on the result.

In short

Spot Repair / SMART Repair is a repair technique in which only the damaged part of a panel is prepared, sprayed and finished, not the whole panel. SMART stands for Small to Medium Area Repair Technology. At GT Exclusive in Nunspeet, the Netherlands, spot repair starts from € 299 incl. VAT and the repair usually takes 1 to 2 working days. The method suits scratches, stone chips, scuffs on bumper corners and light parking damage up to roughly A4 size, where the paint is damaged but the panel is not deformed. The colour is measured on the vehicle, checked on a test panel and blended into the existing paintwork, so no visible transition remains. The repair ends with polishing and a final inspection under controlled lighting. The repaired area carries a 2-year GT repair warranty. For exclusive paints, three-stage colours and composite parts, it is assessed in advance whether spot repair is the right method or a full respray of the panel is the better choice.

How we work

Controlled, from intake to delivery.

  1. 01

    Assessment of the damage

The damage is examined for depth, position and paint type. A scratch down to the primer or bare metal requires a different build-up than a scuff in the clear coat.

  2. 02

    Colour measurement on the car

The colour code is read out and the colour is measured on the panel itself. Paint shifts with UV and age, so the formula is adjusted to the actual shade.

  3. 03

    Preparation of the repair zone

Sanding to a smooth substrate, filling where needed and applying primer. The rest of the panel and adjacent parts are masked and protected.

  4. 04

    Spraying and blending

Base coat and clear coat are applied locally and blended into the existing paintwork. This avoids a hard transition between old and new.

  5. 05

    Polishing and final inspection

The repair zone is polished to a hologram-free finish and checked under controlled lighting before the car is returned.

Why spot repair

Repair where the damage is, not around it

A full respray of a panel is not always necessary. With a scratch on a bumper corner or stone chips on the nose, most of the original paint remains sound. Spot repair limits the intervention to the damaged zone. That saves cost, lead time and the amount of new paint on the car. At lease return or resale, that is a tangible advantage: less repaired surface, more original factory paint. If the damage is larger or sits in the middle of a bonnet, switching to Panel Repair & Respray is advised.

Suitable damage

When spot repair is the right choice

01

Scratches and key scratches

Linear damage down to the base coat or primer, on doors, wings or bumpers. Too deep to polish out, too small for a respray.

02

Stone chips and scuffs

Multiple small paint chips on the nose, bonnet edge or sill. Repaired as a single zone and then preferably protected with PPF.

03

Parking damage on bumper corners

Scuffs from posts, walls or other bumpers. Often paint damage only, without deformation of the plastic, which makes it the ideal case for local repair.

04

When not

Deformed panels, damage in the middle of a large horizontal surface, or certain matte and three-stage paints. In those cases a different recommendation follows after assessment.

The GT Exclusive Standard

No visible transition. No second attempt.

A spot repair is only finished when the transition can no longer be found under controlled lighting. Colour measurement on the vehicle, a test panel, blending and polishing are therefore not options but standard. The result is covered by a 2-year GT repair warranty.

What is spot repair?

Spot repair is a paint repair technique that repairs only the damaged part of a panel. The rest of the panel remains original. The method is also known as SMART repair: Small to Medium Area Repair Technology. It covers scratches, stone chips, scuffs and light parking damage where the paint is damaged but the panel has kept its shape.

The difference from a full respray lies in the scale. In a respray, the whole panel is sanded and sprayed. In spot repair, the intervention is limited to the damage zone and a narrow blending edge.

How does spot repair work at GT Exclusive?

The step-by-step plan on this page sums it up: assess, measure colour, prepare, spray, polish. Colour measurement on the panel itself is the most important step. A factory colour code is a starting point, not an end point. Paint shifts with UV and age. The formula is therefore adjusted to the actual shade and tested on a panel before any paint goes onto the car.

The new paint is then blended into the existing paintwork. This avoids a hard line between old and new. After curing, the zone is polished to a hologram-free finish and given a final inspection under controlled lighting.

Who is spot repair suitable for?

For owners of a Porsche, BMW M, Audi RS or Aston Martin with one clear area of damage on an otherwise sound car. For lease drivers who want a scratch removed before returning the car. And for owners who discover after a paint correction that one mark is too deep to polish out.

Spot repair is less suitable for damage in the middle of a large horizontal surface, for deformed panels or for certain three-stage and matte paints. In those cases Panel Repair & Respray is advised, or Paintless Dent Repair first when a dent is also present.

What does spot repair cost?

Spot Repair / SMART Repair starts from € 299 incl. VAT per repair zone. Multiple areas of damage on the same car are quoted together. The full overview is listed under all starting prices. Indicative consumer prices incl. VAT; the final price depends on the vehicle, its condition, material choice and the desired finish.

A popular combination: spot repair on the bumper corner, bumper refinishing where the damage is larger, and then new Paint Protection Film on the repaired panel. That way the next stone chip does not become a second repair.

Warranty on spot repair

The warranty is split into two parts. On the repair carried out, GT Exclusive provides a 2-year repair warranty: adhesion, colour stability and finish of the repair zone. Any material warranty on the paint system rests with the manufacturer and is stated separately. New damage from use, stone chips or incorrect washing is not covered.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Final prices and warranty terms follow after inspection of the car.

What does spot repair cost?

Spot Repair / SMART Repair starts from € 299 incl. VAT per repair zone. The final price depends on the size of the damage, the paint type and its position on the car. Three-stage and pearlescent colours require more test work and cost more than a solid colour. A fixed price follows after assessment.

What is the difference between spot repair and SMART repair?

There is no material difference. SMART repair is the trade term for Small to Medium Area Repair Technology. Spot repair is the common name for the same method: local repair of paint damage without spraying the whole panel. GT Exclusive uses both terms for the same service.

Will a spot repair remain visible?

When correctly carried out, the transition of a spot repair is not visible, not even in sunlight or under LED lighting. That requires colour measurement on the panel, a test panel and blending into the existing paint. Every repair is checked under controlled lighting before the car is delivered.

Can spot repair be done on any colour?

Solid and metallic colours are suitable. Three-stage colours, pearlescents, matte paints and special factory colours from Ferrari or Porsche, for example, are assessed in advance. Sometimes a full respray of the panel is the better advice, because a local transition can become visible on those paints.

How long does spot repair take?

Usually 1 to 2 working days, depending on the number of repair zones and the paint type. The paint must cure before polishing and inspection. For multiple areas of damage on different panels, the lead time is set out in the quotation in advance.

What warranty applies to spot repair?

The repair carried out is covered by a 2-year GT repair warranty: adhesion, colour stability and finish of the repair zone. This warranty is separate from any material warranty from the paint system manufacturer. New damage from use, stone chips or incorrect washing is not covered.
